Privacy Policy

1. What Data We Collect

• Account information — name, email address, and authentication data managed through Clerk.
• Fishing logs — catch reports, species, locations, and notes you choose to save.
• Location data — GPS coordinates used for map features, offshore data, and track logging when enabled. The mobile app may also collect location in the background (when the app is closed or not in use) while a live location share is active. See “Background location” below.
• Preferences — home inlet, units, range settings, and other app configuration.
• Usage data — app opens, feature usage (which map layers and tabs you use), and session duration. This data is tied to your account and helps us understand which features are valuable and where to improve the app. We do not track your precise location for analytics purposes.

2. How We Use Your Data

• Provide and operate the Pelagic Insight service, including ocean data, forecasts, and mapping.
• Improve features, fix bugs, and develop new functionality.
• Process subscriptions and manage your account.
• Send service-related communications (e.g., subscription confirmations).

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Pelagic Insight:

• Clerk — authentication and user management.
• Stripe — payment processing for web subscriptions.
• RevenueCat — mobile subscription management and Apple In-App Purchase processing.
• Mapbox — map rendering and geospatial services.
• NOAA — ocean and weather data (sea surface temperature, wind, waves, tides, etc.).
• Supabase — database and data storage.

Each third-party service has its own privacy policy governing how it handles your data.

4. Data Retention & Deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by using the “Delete Account” option in the mobile app settings or by contacting us at the email below. Upon deletion, we remove your fishing logs, preferences, subscription records, and authentication data.

5. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure authentication, and access controls. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

6. Background Location (Mobile App)

The Pelagic Insight mobile app offers a Live Location Share feature that lets you send a temporary link to friends or family so they can see your current location on a map while you're fishing. To make this work reliably when your phone's screen is off, you're using another app, or the Pelagic Insight app is in the background, the app collects your device's location in the backgroundfor the duration of an active share.

• Why: So your live share link continues to update as you move, even when the app is closed or not in use.
• What: Latitude, longitude, speed, heading, and accuracy from your device's GPS.
• When: Only while a live location share is active. The share has a duration you choose (e.g., 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours) and you can end it at any time. When the share ends or expires, background location collection stops automatically.
• Who sees it: Anyone you give the share link to. Each share has its own unique link and expires automatically.
• Permission: You will be asked to grant Android or iOS background location access the first time you start a live share. You can change or revoke this permission in your device Settings at any time. If you deny background access, the live share will still work while the Pelagic Insight app is open and on screen, but updates will pause when the screen turns off or you switch apps.

7. Children's Privacy

Pelagic Insight is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
